The central University Communications Office at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking an Assistant Director for News.
The Assistant Director for News reports to the Director of Media Relations and will serve as co-editor of three e-newsletters (Penn News Today, Penn News Weekly and Penn News for Parents), review and edit writing assignments prepared by others, interact with top-level news media, participate in crisis communications, interact with senior University officials and write news releases, feature stories and other pieces. Other duties may also be assigned.
A bachelor’s degree is required as is 5-7 years experience as a media-relations and public-relations professional, preferably in a higher-education setting. The successful candidate must be able to work amiably with and manage the work of others, have excellent writing and editing skills and have experience working with reporters and editors from top media outlets. Experience in crisis communications is helpful. Strong management skills and the ability to work collaboratively are important.
