Lecture on Public Health Impact of Air Pollution and Climate Change

SAMSI is hosting a group that is putting on a public lecture, which is part of the Simons Foundation Public Lecture Series.  Dr. Francesca Dominici, the Professor of Biostatistics in the Harvard School of Public Health and Associate Dean of Information Technology will be speaking at the UNC Friday Center in Chapel Hill on Wednesday, April 24 at 7 p.m.  Her talk will be “The Public Health Impact of Air Pollution and Climate Change.” People who want to attend must register for this event at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/343825 but it is free of charge. More details can be found at our website: http://www.samsi.info/activities/seminars/other-seminars-and-lectures/simons-public-lecture-series-public-health-impact-ai

This talk will review statistical modeling approaches and epidemiological evidence regarding the public health impact of air pollution and extreme heat under a changing climate. Dominici will draw upon massive, heterogeneous, and nationally representative data based on weather, air pollution, health outcomes, and socioeconomic and demographic variables to: 1) quantify health risks based on historical data; 2) predict future risks under different scenarios for climate change; 3) quantify the many sources of uncertainty in these predictions. We will also address the following key challenges: 1) how individuals and their communities will adapt to increasing temperatures and ambient air pollution levels. The health effects of combined exposure to degraded air quality and heat could be more severe than expected based on the individual exposures.

The Simons Public Lectures are a series of lectures happening this year as part of the Mathematics of the Planet Earth 2013 program and the Research Triangle is just one of a very few places in the world chosen to host this prestigious lecture series. Others are happening in Melbourne, Australia, San Francisco, Cape Town-South Africa, Berlin, Germany and a few other places.
